Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine cultural differences in relationships between personality traits and self-determination to the stages of exercise behavior change (SEBC) between Korean and American older adults. Subjects were a convenience sample of 378 older adults including 190 Koreans (mean age = 69.6, SD = 6.9) and188 Americans (mean age = 71.1, SD = 8.5). Questionnaires included the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), the Behavioral Regulation for Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-2) and the Stages of Exercise Behavior Change (SEBC) and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ordinal logistic regressions (Proc CATMOD, SAS). Results showed that education was correlated with SEBC in American respondents. Proc CATMOD showed six independent variables including extrinsic, introjected, identified, and extrinsic regulations, extraversion, and conscientiousness were positively associated with the five stages of
change in Korean older adults (¥ö2=19.43, DF = 4, p=.006;¥ö2 = 10.22, DF = 4, p=.036; ¥ö2=13.96, DF = 4, p=.007; ¥ö2=23.81, DF = 4, p=<.0001;¥ö2 = 10.74, DF = 4, p=.029;¥ö2 = 13.53, DF = 4, p=.009respectively).On the other hand, two independent variables such as conscientiousness and overall self-determination showed positive relationships with the stages of exercise behavior change in American older adults. These findings should be considered in the process of developing effective stage-based intervention strategies among older adults across the cultures in order to increase the probability of moving from a lower to a higher stage and then maintaining the stage shift.
